Thanks for the better pictures!

I would say this looks like Camponotus conspicuus.

Hi,

This is my first post of which might be many. I'm new to any keeping and have found several different ant species over the past month. I hope someone will be able to ID this queen ant.

1. Location (on a map) of collection: Common Wealth Dominica, part of the Caribbean Chain of islands.
2. Date of collection: Found her Today, June 25th, 2017
3. Habitat of collection: Outside my work place, its partly forested, somewhat
4. Length (from head to gaster): See Pic
5. Color, hue, pattern and texture: See Pic

Hey ya'll, I added some more pics as best as I could. These pics are of the previous Ant and of a camponotus ant, she's about 16mm, and I found her near my garage at night. She must of been the only one, and surprisingly the first time seeing such a large queen ant up close. She hasn't shed her wings yet, not even sure if she mated. The first ant from my previous pic I showed has already laid two eggs and this big Camp hasn't yet and they were both caught a day apart. I'm really hoping she does lay, really want a large species of ant. She has pulled at her cotton and that's about it.

Please note that the pics aren't the best. I've ordered some glass test tubes which are larger in diameter too, which should be better for pics.

We're going to need some more pictures, preferably from different angles. If you have any way of measuring her length (with a ruler, provided in millimeters would be ideal), that would also e very helpful. Looking at an image doesn't really tell us how large the queen is; there's no frame of reference for comparison.

From the looks of it, I would probably consider Azteca sp.

I'm really lost as to what this could be. Looking at all the ants listed on antweb in Dominica, I don't see anything that could match this. We're gonna need some more details though, size, and more pictures would greatly help.

While I do see the similarities with Azteca, I don't think this is Azteca. Azteca often have much longer, narrower gaster's than this queen has, along with much bigger eyes, that are differently shaped than the ones this queen has, etc.

I agree, I was quite stumped myself. Azteca seemed to be the most reasonable compared to the others listed on Antmaps, but there are definitely discrepancies.

Some more accurate measurements and some closer, higher definition photos from different angles should at least help us narrow down what it could be.

As of now, we really only know that it's not a member of the Myrmecinae subfamily.

How long do you think she'll take or should I wait to see if she'll lay? And what do you think is the first Ant species?

Thanks!

I honestly have no idea. We'll need some better pictures to properly identify this one, as well.

As soon as I can get a macro lens for my phone, I'll do that.

Thanks!
