My neighbor found a small piece of wood that had a very small Camponotus pennsylvanicus colony in it - only a handful of workers. So, I brought it home, left it outside, and was preparing a plastic bin to use to extract them into tubes.

 

I went to check on the wood about 6 hours later... they were all dead. The wood was being swarmed by Tetramorium workers who were taking the brood and had already killed the queen - they'd left the queen's body on top of the wood.

 

I found a single carpenter worker returning and panicking. I felt bad for her. I was able to rescue 3-4 larvæ though I don't know how healthy they are.

 

The only Camponotus I have right now are 3 C. pennsylvanicus, 1 C. subbarbatus, and 1 C. chromaiodes. Should I boost the pennsylvanicus queens with them? Will the chromaiodes accept pennsylvanicus larvæ, given that they are closely related?

Tetramoria is clearly the name of the cross-yard federation that the Tetramorium colonies have created on my property to eliminate competition. I worry I'm next.

I wouldn't blame the Tets. You put that colony in their territory and the Tets did what they're supposed to do.Surprised birds didn't have their way first.

I'm really bummed I can't steal that name for my Tank-Tetras. Sure I've got Zagara, broodmother of the swarm... but they could have been living in Tetramoria!

I had a colony of Pogonomyrmex californicus in an open container sitting on the ground. They were on the porch, but I covered the outside with fluon (and the inside). I figured since there were so many Argentine ants (this was last year), fluon would make it impossible for them to get in. However. For days I was wondering how the heck the Pogonomyrmex were getting out, because I knew they couldn't climb (they are terrible climbers) and fluon makes it even vastly harder.

 

Then my wife saw a small ground scavenging bird picking out the workers and dropping them on the ground. The bird was playing with the workers and eating them, or just letting them escape lol. I guess the bird was setting some free and others as a snack.

 

I then moved the container up a bit higher and the problem went away. But it was kind of funny  The bird probably figured it was getting an amazing dessert for its nest and that it was a free buffet of food.

I found a colony of termites getting their gasters kicked in by a group of five tetramorium workers. I love tetramorium, but I have to agree that they can get a bit annoying.

Today I found some eating a newborn baby bird that fell out of its nest - while it was still alive.

I just found a group of workers killing off the queens at my blacklight. They are like invicta when they fly too, in the hundreds and a duration of what seems like forever.
