Ants receive cold different than us. At first, they try to hibernate, so basically she dies in her sleep. Also, I do not think you would want to step on a queen this big, that would make a decent splat... Anyway, I checked on her today and she seems a little better. Maybe it is not a permanent thing. Also, all her brood is in a pile again, except for one. :)

She did pull off her own leg. That can't be considered perfectly normal... but we will see.

Actually, I intervened with a trust wire, and got her to let go before she pulled it off. :)

Ok, also to make something clear- I TAKE STUPID AND INFERTILE ANTS FROM DREW. This was a stupid ant. She was NOT sold as an actual colony.

No, she is still ok, and a bit less spazzy.

It is OK, that is your opinion, and I respect that, but the fact of the matter is that she seems calmer every day since I posted this, the day I posted this was the peak day that she was showing such behavior.

I find it funny that the majority of "Crazy Queen" stories are of Camponotus.

Maybe it was just a stress related issue. Probably nothing too serious.

Their large size probably plays a role in it.

Camponotus are large enough that accidents or collisions on their mating flight cause more damage than a lighter ant.

I usually see most of my Camponotus losses within the first 24 hours, and after 3 days I rarely have any deaths.  I have seen some obvious nerological damage in queens which I observed flying right into a wall or into the ground.  Graceful, they are not.

Many parasites also like their larger size, so there could be some mini brain altering pathogen in there somewhere.

I would guess substance abuse, time to give that queen some Rehab. :D

I think it could be brain parasites or toxins..

She is dead now, so this is over. :( All her brood is going to the other queen.

Sorry to hear, hopefully your other colonies do much better, especially with the new brood that they will get.

This queen died, but he had other colonies of the same species so brood boosted them with her brood.

Sound like how one of my Camponotus queen die, you can't blame it on Andrew though cause anything could have happen.  I.e.  Parasites or disease.

Haha, I think this is why he needs to edit the actual first post of this thread. These were potential duds that I didn't want any longer. Greg mentioned that, but it's buried in the thread somewhere.
