I already released this guy so there won't be clearer pics lol. Caught at night in the desert scrub. Had hoped it was an ant but realized at home that it was not :(

This is actually an likely an ichneumon wasp, appears to be in the genus Gelis

We were all wrong!  Not a velvet ant, nor an ichneumon!

 Chyphotes is what you've found!  They're in the family cyphotidae and are convergent with velvet ants, but not in the same superfamily!  They mostly attack beetle larvae
