i was more uh... leaning towards something alive. What is this blue 100 anyway ?

At that size, I would say a few live fruit flies or perhaps even find a small mealworm, about 1-1.5cm long, cut the head off so it can't harm your ants, and toss the body in.  It will twitch around for a while if the ants don't kill it.  I usually freeze my food first if I don't culture it.  I always freeze crickets - they are terrible for having mites.

 

Blue 100 is an ant formula that terry sells on amazon.  Pogonomyrmex seem to love it.  A little goes a long ways with them.

You've mentioned you had a very small and young colony. Think about it this way: an ant colony is a community stomach--the more ants, the larger the stomach, and therefore the larger the appetite.  Further, larvae and gynes play a critical role in the metabolism of certain nutrients, and so without a large number of larvae, assimilating most any food is going to be stemmied.

 

Not only will smaller colonies have different nutritional requirements, similar to how baby humans have different nutritional preferences and requirements compared to adult humans, but also, they will naturally eat very, very little, and infrequently.  

 

This is what makes raising small, young colonies such a challenge, and I'd speculate is a big factor as to why many beginner antkeepers fail.

 

It will likely take a variety of foods and trial and error to rear a small colony to a sufficient number of workers and especially larvae before they really have a consistent appetite for Formula diets.

Also, an update on them - They will eat anything dead and the colony is growing VERY slow. Picture update soon *

Two days ago I moved them into a new test tube, and they are dying quickly. There are two workers left, no brood. Any ideas on what's happening ?


and the queen is still alive.
