I keep all species besides Prenolepis imparis on a cable. I use a zoo med 15 watt, and use a little point-thermometer thing to monitor the temp, although it's not designed to monitor heat devices, just the temperature of meats. It's probably not extremely accurate, but gives the general idea.

The hottest part of the cable is probably about 77 or 78, but the room temp is low-mid sixties. This gives a heat gradient.

What would I pick for the temp then? 75-80?

85 to 90 degrees for me (Solenopsis invicta and Camponotus floridanus). Surprising how so many people keep their ants at 60 to 70 degree temperatures, but I'm sure not everyone wants to grow their colonies quickly.
