About to fly in northern Ca

I went out hiking today and found multiple nests with drones peeping out waiting to fly. shouldn't be long now! i didn't get a pic and was quick to leave as to not disturb them too much. Major was all black, with a red gaster/half gaster. any ideas on species? and if I'm seeing drones peeking out how long should i expect till they fly? sorry for the novice questions xD
