Location:  Morgan Trail, Cleveland National Forest, Lake Elsinore, California.
Habitat:  Oak forest/Coastal sage scrub.
Coloration, hue and pattern:  Dark Brown/Black head and front half of thorax, orangish brown rear half of thorax, legs and gaster
Length:  15mm.
This Camponotus major was trapped in a hole and looked pretty beat up, missing half of one antenna and the lower part of both front legs. It died soon after I got home.

Could be Camponotus ocreatus or C. sansabeanus according to both Dr. James C. Trager and gcsnelling.

I know C. ocreatus are all over that area, so I'm thinking that is probably it.
