If they're from a species and a queen that you caught in your area you can just open a window and let them fly.

If not the colony will just kill them after a while.

The colony will not kill alates, that is just wrong. If conditions do not favor a nuptial flight (i.e. they cannot escape their outworld) the alates essentially become workers, they shed their wings and stay in their nest.

They will just walk around aimlessly in the out world, don't worry about it, just don't let them escape into your house.

All my colonies are dead.

 Except:

  Pogonomyrmex barbatus

  Pheidole obscurithorax

  Pheidole morens

First off, congratulation on managing to raise a colony until it produces alates! I have yet to own a colony of that size haha.

Anyways, as the other users before me have stated, the alates will likely just wander around the outworld before most of them die during the winter.

Here's my leopard gecko/ant youtube: https://goo.gl/cRAFbK

My ant website.

It contains a lot of information about ants, guides, videos, links, and more!

If you have any feedback, please post here or PM me, don't be shy!

I currently keep:

Camponotus modoc

Formica podzolica

Then when they become a drain on colony resources they will be killed, esp. the males.
