Yep, Xenopus. They're frogs that remain fully aquatic even as adults that are commonly kept in aquariums or used as laboratory animals, and they've become established as an invasive species in California.

Oh yeah... NEVER use water that comes from a tap source for tadpoles. I have kept Leopard Frogs, Bull Frogs, and Tree Frogs from tadpoles and they ALWAYS failed if I did not use the water in which they were from.

Vendayn are these from that pond/creek area near you? If so...please consider sending an email to the CA DFG because they will probably send out some people to try to kill these off. Xenopus can really destroy the ecosystem of our creeks in this area and they already have so many pressures without invasive frogs that eat anything they can get in their mouths.

Very invasive but the species is very well established in Southern California and I doubt that anything will be done to control them as a result.

Orange Co. was one of the last places that they hadn't really gotten a foothold until recently.

I think I actually sent in the first photographic evidence of them out in the wild in Orange Co. back in September 2015 and the CA DFG sent out a group of people to try to contain the problem (by ripping out all the vegetation in a section of the creek and hopefully the frog).

You could try submitting a report here as well: https://nas.er.usgs....tingReport.aspx

Pretty disappointing if they don't do something about them your area could very easily lead to them taking over all of Laguna Canyon!
