Making nests is one of my favourite parts of this hobby. .

Same here. I love designing and building stuff--one of the main reasons I got into this hobby.

I have been neglecting these girls just as I have been neglecting this journal.

I pretty much just dump a meal worm or two in every other week. I'm over this colony. After the myrmecia, there is no joy in keeping these tiny guys.

I am going to try make this colony a free range colony.. just the queens contained but the workers free to come and go.

I vaguely remember reading a colony like that from the Internet. A guy made a nest that a queen can't get out but workers can. He placed the nest by a window and used a tube that workers can reach outside.

The journal wasn't complete and I never read how it turned out.

That's an awesome idea. I wouldn't be able to do that in the city though. I'd come to find my entire colony has been sprayed with Raid one day.

It can be easily done with Atta, because the queens are much larger than even the supermajors, but it may be possible with ants such as Lasius where the queen is much larger than workers. I would think this idea can only be used with larger ants though.
