Actually it says they are a brazillian Solenopsis sp

But another website said Pseudomyrmex. Also, Pseudomyrmex love trees.

If the image is one of the ant in question it is neither Pseudomyrmex or Solenopsis.

 

"The mother died of broncho aspiration, it is probable that the ants have bitten the trachea, which caused an inflammation and could no longer breathe,”

 

This could easily be the result of formic acid sprayed into the throat by any ants which got into the mouth/throat.

The ant in the image is from Papua New Guinea.

The thing is that pictures on news articles about ants aren't necessarily accurate.

 

Sometimes "nature documentaries" will throw footage of termites in with ants. I facepalm so hard that I knock the memories out.

I was reading a page on fire ants and they had a picture of an earwig. I face palmed so hard that my brain came out the back of my head.

There are 2 petiole nodes and I don't think Myrmicinae spray Formic acid, I'm not sure though.

It even shows the stinger in the picture.
