Any ideas what this is? I found it under my kyak rolled up in a ball... I assume in preparation for hibernation.

Has only six legs -> is an insect but not a caterpillar. Probably some sort of beetle larva.

We should respect all forms of consciousness. The body is just a vessel, a mere hull.

Makes me think of black carrion beetle larva (Silphidae) but not sure. Does it roll itself when you take in in your hand and does it release odorous gas ?

It does roll into a ball and as for the gas, I am not sure?

No, I am thinking it is what  Nexus said, carrion beetle larva (Silphidae), the body shape is right , but a little dark for what I had. However colors in insects may vary really depending on temperature and location.

Beetle larva, but definetely not a caterpillar hunter or a carrion beetle. Probably a carabid.

Does it have a soft, velvety texture?

It actually does have this soft, velvety texture you speak of. :)

That looks like a carabid to me.  If you still have it, I would try feeding it some small soft-bodied insects.

Current Species:
Camponotus fragilis

Novomessor cockerelli

Pogonomyrmex montanus

Pogonomyrmex rugosus

Manica bradleyi

It died. :( Still curious what it is though!

Looks like some kind of click beetle. They have a cool "when I'm on my back I can flip back over" thing that makes a click noise [it's hard to hear and I'm not sure if all species make the click sound]

Looks a bit like the lightning bugs we find around here; genus Ellychnia?
