I found these two beetles wandering outside, one is bigger than the other. Caught in SJ. Large one is about 1".

Looks like you got a male/female pair! (They can't really be bred in captivity though, they got a weird lifecycle that involves being a solitary bee STD.) Adult oil beetles are herbivorous, feeding on fresh leaves. I don't know what exact species those are, but around here the oil beetles eat ginseng leaves.

You really have to [censored] them off to get them to release the liquid, but your concern is valid.
