ant queen help id

Best Answer sgheaton , September 29 2016 - 6:17 AM

I'd really take any of the anting names I say with a grain of salt...... but I throw my 2 cents in with Zero that it's Pogonomyrmexnomyrmex as well. The last picture has me thinkin' might even go so far and say pogonomyrmex occidentalis.

I am new to ant keeping and this forum. Here is the first queen I ever caught, 9/22, outside my office in Elko, NV. She (it?) was walking on concrete and asphalt, and the general vegetation of the area includes sagebrush, russian olive, and many other riparian shrub species found along the Humboldt river. She is a darker red color with lighter stripes on her gaster, and fine white hairs that i only noticed because of the flash on my camera. Wing scars where semi apparent under my vegetation dissection microscope, but it is old so who knows. I posted her to reddit when i captured her to try to get help IDing her, and I think she is either a crematogaster or Solenopsis molesta. I am hoping for crematogaster as the solenopsis molesta is likely a social parasite species. Anyways, the imgur album is below and thanks for any help in advance! :D

Dang those two species look very similar. Ant web lists several species of Pogonomyrmex in Nevada but none of the others... Is there a different angle of picture I can try to get that would help. I am used to identifying plants for my job but this small moving insect ID is new to me :D.

Novamessor seems to have a slimmer build from pogonomyrmex you usally tell them apart by the head and body

Thanks for the help.

That species is found in the general area of me. I haven't noticed the little spikes at the back of the thorax, but then again I didn't even see that hairs until last night.

If she is POOC, does anyone have any idea of how they are for raising into a colony. She hasn't laid any eggs the last I checked, but i just got her into a test tube set up this past weekend, and i put her in a shoe box with a heating cable on the other side to keep her a little warmer. If she is fertile, what is the typical time it takes her to start producing? The wiki lists them as both claustral and semi-claustral. Should I get something like a test tube portal and try feeding her or just wait to see how she behaves? Any tips and advice are greatly appreciated.

Only thing is, I thought that the queen looked too long for pogonomyrmex and that the head was too small

Thanks for the info, I just looked on the guide to posting on the site and followed the directions for adding an image. I will try different techniques to get the pics in the post like you suggested in the future.

Hey, I found the correct BBCode provided by imgur. This is how i will do it in the future :D.
