Wow you must be making quite the profit from this!

They are using materials to make artificial founding chambers, putting mileage on cars, using gas, and driving on bad roads.  My impression though is that the biggest resource cost is time:  assembly, traveling, looking for queens, posting and emailing, meeting buyers.  They could be making more in air conditioned offices in front of a PC if money were the sole motivator.

There's "profit", sure. Like enough for a $50 steak dinner every week and groceries.

I do this for fun, it pays for the hobby. If you want to make money with ants, go into formicariums and accessories such as feeders and food. And even then I doubt it is crazy lucrative.

The fact that one can't even sell or mail ants across State borders severely limits outreach - and that's not taking into account gas, lodging, time, feeding ($60 a week), making, sorting, designing, heating, and researching the varying 100s of colonies I have.

They don't do well past the first year, that's from my own experience. I don't sell them because of that.

Two queen polygynous C. sansabeanus and C. semitestaceus now available :)

The C. semitestaceus were found here in the desert, and do not require hibernation. They look similar in coloring to C. fragilis and C. sansabeanus.

Myrmecocystus mexicanus

They are doing great this season. This will be the first time I'll have them up for sale. I've collected them every year, but don't like to put them onto the market until the colony and queen looks healthy - usually at least 20-30 workers with tons of brood. These queens have a terrible mortality rate, even after the first workers emerge, so I like to wait til the colony stabilizes and not "rip off" buyers if the queen dies post sale. Can the queen still die after this? Of course, but death rate reduces the longer the colony thrives.

Right now, have about a dozen colonies doing very well with another dozen more on the way with tons of cocoons.

Ordered 5 THA Fortress Type III to house the faster growing coloines as well. They do quite well in them. Will sell some colonies with a THA Fortress.

Don't have the exact numbers, but they are visually and noticeably larger. Coloring is near identical.
