I dug up a colony today, sadly it turned out to be a satellite nest so I threw them right back. :(

I found a tiny colony on the side of a mountain once.

Turned over a rock and there were a couple hundred tiny little yellow specks and a slightly bigger yellow speck - an entire colony trying to warm up on the underside of a rock.  When I turned it over, they hung on.

Very good escape artists, and so small....  I replaced their rock and left them to go their way.

AKA thief ants.

 

I learned 3 new things about ants today.

 

1. The existence of thief ants.

2. And existence of Brachymyrmex depilis that's even smaller than Solenopsis Molesta while googling about Solenopsis Molesta.

3. And that James Trager on this forum is actually a quite famous person and a real pro in ants.
