i got a Camponotus heucaleanus queen with two workers from canadian anter in july

shortly after i got them they went up to three workers

its now mid august and I'm worried for them

two of the workers died and they ate their brood

I'm worried because if this worker dies that's probably it for the queen

Can you describe their living situation in a little more detail including their diet and temperature?

What are you feeding them for protein and what kind of honey are you feeding?
What is the temperature of their nest?
Also, how often are you checking on them?

I stopped using my heating cable with my novaeboracensis colony. At first the seemed to love the heat but eventually the moves away from it. I also lost some queens in text tubes I place next to the cable (mind you they ran parallel to the cable and thus the ants didn't have the ability to self regulate). My mistake but I didn't think the cable was that powerful to little ants. Just a heads up. Perhaps because my apt. is quite warm.

If you're new to ant keeping give them some time and space. Feed them of course but keep them in the dark in their tube until they're populated enough to be moved into a formicarium. 20-30 workers they say. I've never had a problem with any starting colony if I just let them be.

Not 100% on your circumstances but that's just a piece of my thoughts. Take what you like and leave the rest.

Sincerely

Are you cutting up the mealworms for them? The nanitics may have trouble getting through the exoskeleton.
