I would get live feeder insects if you want them to thrive.

Are there any good alternate food sources instead of live feeder insects for protein?

I'm feeding my small colony of Camponotus F. Some high protein koi food, I just drop some water on the pellets to make them soft and easy to break... They go crazy, as soon as one discover the food they all 7 workers go out of the nest and bring it as fast as they can in to the nest and close to the queen.

My roommates are against me keeping live crickets, worms, or cockraoches. So, I got a live crickets from Amazon kept the box in a bag and directly into the freezer.

Now, whenever I want to feed the colony, I pick one frozen cricket and keep it in their outworld. They quickly go for it once the cricket reaches room temperature.

Your roommates sound like my wife. I heard live bugs even from pet stores could have mites so the freezing probably helps kill the mites too.

Definitely. Just pop them in the freezer and thaw them out as needed.
