Are there any ants species that can grow without a queen? I saw some ants in a pile of dirt and I digged until I saw no ants but I couldn't find the queen

No, there are different ants that have different castes that can serve the same purpose but chances are the colony you found was just a satellite nest or very good at hiding their queen.

Only some very primitive generally enlongated ants that have gamergates.
