Hi there! I went on a 6 month or so hiatus, in part due, and in part cause of the death of my colonies. 

However, I went back to the Sierras, and restarted my collection, which is now as follows:

Aphaenogaster uinta, Camponotus vicinus, Camponotus modoc, Formica cf. aserva, Formica cf. micropthalma, Formica cf. manni, Formica subpolita, Formica cf. subaenescens, Lasius americanus, Manica invidia, Pogonomyrmex salinus, Pogonomyrmex sp. 1, Solenopsis validiuscula, & Solenopsis sp. 3 (new Sierra variant).

I’m guessing she’s dead now. They sprayed her a bit. I’m not home right now.

The queen is still alive and some workers care for her a bit. It was just a couple who were attacking her.

She is immobilized but slive and being tended to. The workers help her move by dragging her. Hopefully she can lay eggs. Otherwise I will find another queen to take over.

She is now dead. I think she was a different queen that was hibernating nearby that just ran across the nest when I was collecting them. I will find another queen, chill her and the colony, and then introduce them. This is pretty much the most common ant in my neighborhood besides Tetramorium. I believe they are L. aphidicola. They did seem to be fine with her, but she was unfortunately dying by the time they were.

The other option is to take out the callow workers and some pupae that has not yet enclosed and introduce it to a queen. They have lots of pupae and there is an adorable callow hobbling around!

There is a ant huddle as I am not heating them so they are all resting with each other and probably getting ready for hibernation.

Right now my goal is to find a queen next year if these survive until then. I will for sure try to get Prenolepis and non parasitic Lasius next year. I prefer the more basic looking ants like these than species like Camponotus. I don’t know why I just do. Nylanderia is also a goal. I think I have found some workers in the past. I am not sure.

Well, I can assure, Nylanderia is very fun and easy. My colony sent 40 workers out for one mealworm today!

They already flew sadly... I just worry about containment. My parents wouldn’t want to deal with that.

Yeah, my mom is a bugaphobe too. That's why we have the ants in MY room :)

my parents aren’t scared of bugs they (mostly my mom) don’t really like ants that much. My dad says they’re pretty cool. I have tarantulas too so...
