I am back from my trip and I have some bad news. Queen 3 is dead. Queen 1’s brood looks dead but she may have eggs I can't see.

The queen wasn’t laying and her brood was dead. I fed her to a pet spider.

I am hoping to buy a P. occidentalis queen.

The colony should arrive next week. For those of you who also ordered from tarheelants, you know why.

She is being housed in a vial with moist coco coir. I gave her a starter tunnel and she has dug a tiny chamber at the top of it: She still has her wings, but she behaves like a fertile queen. I am heating her for now. I will hibernate her sometime in October and take her out of hibernation in March.

I was wrong about the ID! She is Solenopsis molesta!

Haha.  So many people do that, confusing B. depilis with S. molesta.

Hi there! I went on a 6 month or so hiatus, in part due, and in part cause of the death of my colonies.

However, I went back to the Sierras, and restarted my collection, which is now as follows:

Aphaenogaster uinta, Camponotus vicinus, Camponotus modoc, Formica cf. aserva, Formica cf. micropthalma, Formica cf. manni, Formica subpolita, Formica cf. subaenescens, Lasius americanus, Manica invidia, Pogonomyrmex salinus, Pogonomyrmex sp. 1, Solenopsis validiuscula, & Solenopsis sp. 3 (new Sierra variant).

Her super bright yellow abdomen gave it away!

Why aren’t you using the traditional test tube set up for founding? How will you keep the substrate moist?

I would just water the sub when necessary. Also the test tubes I have are extremely wide and best suited for large species.

She has taken off one wing. I think she is fertile.

Nice. My Proceratium pergandei queen should lay soon. I found her running around in the woods.
