Pogonomyrmex occidentalis alates spotted in Medicine Hat last 2 days!

I am beyond excited. I thought they flew in morning. Seems late afternoon. So I will return later today. Rain in threatening so I am very hopeful they will fly. I’ve found 20 nests in a small area. Got some great pix!!! Will try to attach them. I’ve been waiting for 11 months for this day since I discovered them here in Medicine Hat

This was cool to see. Nest is on a tire track and a vehicle had just gone by. Entrance hole crushed. They worked away and opened it up. That’s when the males came out

In the above pix the princesses were helping to move rocks.

As well. Three nests had blocked their entrance holes overnight when I arrived at 8:30 am there were no entrances. Also watching Formica obscuripes at the Pogonomyrmex nests and the Pogonomyrmex and then rolling around and biting and the obscuripes quickly leaving. Nasty bites

I believe Medicine Hat is the only place they are found in Canada
