Hi all,

I'm a bit new to keeping ants, and am not an expert on Camponotus species. I am trying to narrow down the I.D. of a queen I collected in Mono County, part of a massive colony in a rotting conifer. Are there any distribution maps available that might help me narrow down the possibilities? I lack any taxonomic keys of the genera. I see there are 18 species recorded in California according to antweb.org.

Thank you,

Spencer

Use antmaps. I go to mono county every year to camp, and I always find C. Modoc everywhere.

Hi there! I went on a 6 month or so hiatus, in part due, and in part cause of the death of my colonies.

However, I went back to the Sierras, and restarted my collection, which is now as follows:

Aphaenogaster uinta, Camponotus vicinus, Camponotus modoc, Formica cf. aserva, Formica cf. micropthalma, Formica cf. manni, Formica subpolita, Formica cf. subaenescens, Lasius americanus, Manica invidia, Pogonomyrmex salinus, Pogonomyrmex sp. 1, Solenopsis validiuscula, & Solenopsis sp. 3 (new Sierra variant).

Camponotus is California is a huge taxonomic mess. Keys may or may not be helpful. Find a copy of the "Ants of Nevada" by the Wheelers, The keys in there will be decent for that area.Do not rely entirely on antweb or antmaps both have their flaws. Also get a copy of the ants of north america by fisher and cover.
