Please do not take this the wrong way, but if you have a high mortality rate with founding colonies, keeping a wild caught colony will be very difficult.

I would seriously reccomend trying to get a few founding colonies started from queens in order to develop an idea of what ants like and don't like before taking a mature colony from the wild. Although one colony may not make a difference to the environment, there is no point in collecting colonies that you will not be able to care for in the long run, as if founding queens die on you mature colonies probably will as well.
