Hello everybody, I'm going by ANTMOON. Sorry it's not more original, but this is quite new to me. I am in the Riverside area of SoCal, and I have always wanted an ant farm. I started googling them to see how practical they were. I was extremely surprised to find out that they are much more than the little ant farms I used to see as a kid. BTW, I'm pretty freakin old and smart phone challenged (if only they were as interesting as ants). Anyway, I am just besides myself with enthusiasm and excitement as I read and watch videos to learn more about ants. I happened across a small group of carpenter ants brumating (hope that is correct) while working many years ago, and I now am the proud caretaker of a growing colony of Camponotus sansabeanus. I was amazed when I first saw them, I had never seen such a large ant in So Cal and I immediately asked the residents about them. I also care for a new colony of Formica francoeuri, with thanks going out to the GAN Farmers. I hope to be able to join in on hunts, and learn the proper use of the black light attraction process. Thank you all very much for reading this, and even more for sharing your wisdom and concerns. And of course, a very big Thank You to dspdrew...YOU ROCK

Welcome ANTMOON! Yeah, Camponotus sansabeanus are very large! Be on the lookout though, there are larger ants in Southern California, like the absolutely enormous Camponotus ocreatus. There is also the leaf cutting Acromyrmex versicolor. Best of luck anting to you!

I too look forward to that. Awesome thought, I do remember that there is a gallery listed above, is that where you post pix? and is there a forum or such a place I could get suggestions on taking these photos?    cameras or my iPhone for example

There's a thread on how to post pics. The gallery thing works well you just go up create an album upload pics to the album. then when you want them in the post you click on My Media and choose the pic you want in the post.

There's also a very good Photo thread of peoples pictures some of them are amazing.

 

In the field I try to get by with my phone or even for large ants. I use my camera for really small stuff and better quality.
