Jeez this is a hard question, but I've narrowed it down to three, DacetonStrumigenys, and Cephalotes. I'd have to go with Daceton as my favorite though.

Over all I say Camponotus cause they are big, polymorphic and easy to keep.

I select Aphaenogaster too but really only A. tennesseensis

 

Also interest in the Fungus Ants Trachymyrmex septentrionalis and Stigmatomma pallipes

Strumigenys, mystrium, cephalotes, stigmatomma, acanthomyrmex, meranoplus, proceratium, discothyrea, protalaridris... the list goes on and on. Just cryptic ants in general.

Strumigenys, mystrium, cephalotes, stigmatomma, acanthomyrmex, meranoplus, proceratium, discothyrea, protalaridris... the list goes on and on. Just cryptic ants in general.

What about Temnothorax? I’m in love with them, but haven’t found any queens (although my black light shipped today and should arrive tomorrow).

They are more common than Camponotus in rotting hickory nuts and twigs.

Wait really? I’ve looked in so many acorns, walnuts, and sticks, and I’ve only found Camponotus queens and colonies! :( guess I’ll have to try different locations.
