I'm sure many of you have heard of the spiders of the genus Deinopis, commonly referred to as Net-casting Spiders or Ogre-faced Spiders. Well a few days ago, I was doing some research into them, and I stumbled upon Deinopis spinosa, a spider apparently native to Southeastern North America, including my home state of South Carolina! I would absolutely love to find, and potentially raise one of these beautiful spiders. It is the spider species I want above all others. I actually currently do own a spider, a Mexican Flameleg Tarantula I named Hookfang. I've had her for almost 5 and a half years, and she's almost as big as my hand. So I'm definitely no stranger to owning spiders. Has anyone ever seen a Deinopis spinosa before? And of so, where in in what environment did you find it in? Thanks for any information that can be offered. (y)

Lucky! How high was it off of the ground, and what time of day did you find it? Was it resting or was it waiting for prey with it's net set up?

It was resting. It was in a small bush, about 2-3 feet off the ground. Around 4 pm.

I don't know much about spiders at all. I live in Michigan though and lately at my girlfriend's house there have been giant spiders over 2 inches wide running around. I always called them wolf spiders I have no idea what they are actually called. Anyway ever since I've been seeing them. I have been wanting to catch a few small ones and raise them. I've always wanted a black widow I have never found one myself. One of my friends has found them. If you do find what you are looking for you should do a journal on it. I think it would be really cool to read.

The spiders probably are wolf spiders. I see them all of the time. I actually saw a huge one last night. I will definitely start a journal on my Ogre-faced Spider(s) if I find any.

Go over to arachnoboards and a member just posted an extensive care guide for these guys.

Proverbs 6:6-8 New International Version (NIV)

Go to the ant, you sluggard;
    consider its ways and be wise!
It has no commander,
    no overseer or ruler,
yet it stores its provisions in summer
    and gathers its food at harvest.

I found a really cool female jumping spider an inch long and really fat. Her clutch of 500 or so eggs were larger than her abdomen. two yello/gold stripes down back.
