They might fly again. Certainly Veromessor pergandei and Pheidole barbata are still yet to fly, and should be flying in the next month or two.

Hey dspdrew  I live in Southern California and do you have any idea when is the best time to go anting, I know after it rains is a good time, but I thought it was still too early for many ants to fly. Am I wrong? If so do you know what ants are flying now? Just so I can be ready with some test tubes.

It's freezing cold out. Nothing is flying at the moment. You have to wait for a significant warm up. When that happens, we might see the two species I just mentioned fly in the desert.

Any trips coming up anytime soon? If not, when do you think the next trip will be?

I'm going to painted canyon this month. What's flying up in the desert right now, and are they attracted to a blacklight?

Pretty much nothing until it rains again.

This thread is always useful, but it's also getting long in the tooth since it was started many years ago.

Maybe make new threads for each season when we start up again? ie, "2018 Season, Dspdrew's Southern California Anting MIssions"

Looking at the weather, I think Veromessor pergandei might fly Monday or Tuesday just southwest and up the hill from Palm Desert, or the far west end of Palm Springs and Desert Hot Springs.

I found an observation on iNat of V. pergandei alates gathering at the entrance of a nest on March 10.  Pic was taken at Sloane Canyon, Dehesa.

You won't need iNaturalist for these guys. They are present anywhere in the SoCal desert. Not even sure if they close their doors in the Winter. I've seen them out in the middle of Winter foraging.

Possibly if it doesn't rain, but it's supposed to rain more all week after Tuesday.

Will be heading out to the desert tomorrow and check numerous spots south of the 10 from Whitewater to Palm Springs. That area got .25 to .5 inches of rain, and temperatures will be 88 highs and 65 lows. Looks primed for things to fly, most likely V. pergandei. Plan on staying til nightfall to see if there is anything else scurrying around.
