While horseback riding the other day I noticed these guys, I didn't stop to look then but went back to check them out today! These were in the same general vicinity as the others, I think located about 6-8 nests of these, of that count only 3 were active, 2 very active and they seemed to have been cleaning out the dead from hybernation, large graveyards. The larger caste worker is about 6mm in length

They look like to Veromessor pergandei to me.

I will get you a closer pic of a worker soon! I may be wrong but the color doesn't appear to be all black, the head and thorax "seem" to have a very dark rust color, similar to a fire ant but ALMOST black, if that makes any sense

They look like V. pergandei, they would also fly around now.

Yeah, harvester ants that are easy to care for, don't sting, fully claustral, polymorphic, polygynous, and grow fast.
