Colobopsis sp. has always been one of my dream genera as I love their phragmotic majors and how they are so specialized to live inside of hollow twigs. I've always had some great formicarium design ideas, and I finally found a nest, but the problem is that it was a satellite nest with no queen. I found the nest in a hollow twig of a Fraxinus americana tree in my front yard. The tree is very small and has lost all of its leaves, so the main nest shouldn't be too difficult to find, but until then, I have a nice satellite nest with 23 minors, 5 majors, and some brood in various stages of development. I hope to find the main nest soon. Their current formicarium is a CD case with a hollow Phytolacca americana stem glued against the plastic so I can see what they are doing. I plan to get them in a better formicarium soon though, preferably something with a little more height to it. These ants are beautiful and I hope I can find the queen and the res of the colony soon. Here are some pictures of them:

I found the main nest, or at least a very large satellite nest. I'm not sure if it has the queen yet, but I'm pretty sure it does. It's in a stick about a meter long, and I can't wait to search through it!

So that nest I collected was yet another satellite nest. No queen. How big is this colony?!

I've finished their better nest design. I've added in some live Vitis rotundifolia vines, a Fraxinus americana twig which I have cut in half, hollowed out and put a plastic screen over, and a dead Vitis rotundifolia vine. I plan on using a hollowed out acorn cap for feeding them sugar water as this species loves their sweets. I hope to find the main nest soon so I can catch the queen and it can be a colony that is here to stay. Pictures of the formicarium coming soon.

I have found a second colony at my Aunts house inside of a Dogwood Tree, and I found the queen his time! Definitely not as colorful as my Colobopsis impressa queen, but she's a little bigger. There are around 30 or so workers.

The queen and most of the workers of this colony have unexpectedly died. The remaining individuals I have introduced to the original colony. I am still looking for their main colony, but they are doing pretty good for now.

The colony has been doing well, and I have not seen any deaths in quite a while. I'm still looking for the queen however.

Colobopsis obliqua was flying last night, and I captured 2 queens! I don't really expect these ones to be fertile, but I'll be capturing lots of queens during their massive flights, so I should at least get a few fertile individuals. (y)
