Location (on a map) of collection: Desert Center

Date of collection: 10/14/2018

Habitat of collection: Bone dry looking soil but still wet from rain and dry shrubs everywhere

Length (from head to gaster): 7mm

Color, hue, pattern and texture: Light brown with dark markings. Hairy and shiny, but not too shiny. Dark circles on top of their thorax and head.

 

Founds lots of these, but only a few made it back home alive. Also, the third picture I'm not sure if it's the same just with a darker thorax

That almost looks like a Myrmecocystus Mexicanus!

Yeah their gaster threw me off(looked like the coloration and brown stripes of ones I see online. But the head is not the right shape and the color is too dark. Really did think it was though for a second there

This is definitely Pheidole sp. The head is the right shape, as are the petioitle and postpetioitle. She also has propodeal spines, which definitely rules out Solenopsis.

Awesome thanks! Would you say that the last pic is also Pheidole sp. even though it's darker?

The last one looks like Pheidole xerophila. My guess on the first one would be Pheidole gilvescens. They're both very common out there.

 

I have a pretty good sized colony of Ph. gilvescens. Ph. xerophila, I've never had any luck with.

Ah okay. Thanks man. I came across those posts trying to ID them, and I thought they looked familiar, but wasn't too sure.
