Hey Everybody! 

 

Yesterday I got to see some Lasius workers tending aphids in the wild for the first time! 

Thank you MrILoveTheAnts for Identifying them for me as Lasius neoniger.

I'm hoping to go back sometime this week and check them out, 

and I'll also get a good picture of the plants and the area.

You should try getting you hands on one of these little things, I find them very useful Mini Tripods , it will help with the shaky hand situation.

I really do want one of them. I'm hoping to stumble across a cheap but sturdy one maybe at the dollar store. This plant stalk however was about four feet high so it wouldn't have helped. I could probably get a selfie stick and sort of use it as a mono-pod to stabilize my phone while I'm recording.

Finally caught a Lasius queen the other day! She was digging in my yard in Howell, NJ around 2 pm and a very hot and humid day. 

Hopefully she does well so I can maybe build a terrarium and add some wild plants with aphids to see if the workers will tend them. 

Does anybody here have any experience with that in captivity or observations of it in the wild I should consider?

No, I actually caught 8 lasius queens about a week ago. They are all in test tube set-ups and 5/8 queens have a large batch of eggs. I know they are really easy to keep. Have Fun!

That's awesome! I still only have one Lasius and the last I checked she had 8 eggs!
