1. Location of collection: hisarya, Plovdiv, Bulgaria, east Europe about 370 m elevation
2. Date of collection: 25th march
3. Habitat of collection: on a sidewalk, but I live in small town (about 7.5 K population) and we have a lot of green areas, small houses with gardens, schools and etc
4. Length (from head to gaster): it looks like 10-11 mms
5. Color, hue, pattern and texture: black with tiny light lines on her gaster ( I guess these are different segments of her ...shield" or as it's called)
6. Distinguishing characteristics: it's a little black ant ... with legs and antennas :D
7. Distinguishing behavior: I didn't see anything special
8. Nest description: small plastic pill box

Nice queen you got there! I have no idea what it is but you brought me good news! I am from Serbia,- so the flights should be around the same time. On the side note, did you see any other queens today?

Nice find, Vanko.

Based on the image, I'm pretty sure this is a Messor harvester ant species. It could be either M. oertzeni, M. structor, or M. wassmani, but it seems like most people tend to catch Messor barbarus more frequently during this time of the year. Sorry for the uncertain ID, and good luck with your new queen!

Thanks a lot!!! Also I have 2 more queens and I think they are same species. I will be very glad if you could tell me how I should care for them.

PS one of the queens I caught 5 days ago has about 10 eggs right now is it good?
