I live in Northern Va and I may be able to find an established colony (here in Fairfax) and take their queen and colony if you'd like?

Fire ants(Solenopsis invicta and richteri) are hardly in VA yet, and colonies are secluded to certain areas of the state. You can do whatever you want, but I wouldn't keep them if I were you. If you were to catch or locate a colony it would be best to kill them. There are so many other awesome ants here in Virginia.

S invicta are a giant PITA to keep js. They're small and really good at escaping, it's one thing to find a few, or even several, escaped Camponotus or something, but a bunch of fire ants loose in your room blows. They also grow extremely quickly, Also, due to extensive containment efforts both in the states and abroad, afaik unless the species is already reported in your specific area then buying or catching them them elsewhere, even in your state, and transporting them to your area would be illegal.

Some ants are best left alone, and unfortunately, Solenopsis invicta are one of them. Do what ever you want, but make sure you are prepared for the insane growth and hunger that a colony of these has.
