    Hi, I'm Nick, greetings to everyone on the forum.  I am currently raising a Pheidole cf. navigans colony, which, just yesterday, got it's first worker!  I will also post a journal on this colony, which will probably, sadly, not have pictures or videos for  a while, as I do not have access to a macro lens.  If anyone has any recommendations on where to go for finding queen ant, ideally an area my parents would want to go to, I am open to suggestions.  I would also like to say a belated Merry Christmas and an early Happy New Year to everybody out there.

Hi there! I went on a 6 month or so hiatus, in part due, and in part cause of the death of my colonies. 

However, I went back to the Sierras, and restarted my collection, which is now as follows:

Aphaenogaster uinta, Camponotus vicinus, Camponotus modoc, Formica cf. aserva, Formica cf. micropthalma, Formica cf. manni, Formica subpolita, Formica cf. subaenescens, Lasius americanus, Manica invidia, Pogonomyrmex salinus, Pogonomyrmex sp. 1, Solenopsis validiuscula, & Solenopsis sp. 3 (new Sierra variant).

Welcome to the forum!  There are a good amount of us on here from Orange County as well.  

 

There are tons of topics here about good places to go collecting, but it is Winter right now, so nothing will be flying and having queens out and about.

Currently in Palm Springs and there is still ants out! I would recommend digging up founding chambers (little rings on the ground) or looking under stones. I actually found a solenopsis Queen today under one!

Cool, I actually found some un-identified queens in my pool which I have been catching for weeks, but I cannot seem to get them to lay; I have treated them as semi-claustral, and claustral, but they still won't lay, I have also tried polygynic foundings as well as monogynic foundings, but neither work, unfortunetly. :/

they could be males. If you could post a picture we could help,ID it.

I do not have anything to take good pictures with.  If I am correct in my guess of genus, (Cardiocondyla),  I have queens, I know because I have found colonies of this species in the wild, and the queens in those colonies look, as far as I can tell, identical, and I looked very closely, I also looked on the internet. I will try to get a macro lens as soon as possible for identification.

 

 

 

Edit:  I also think I have identified the species: Cardiocondyla muaritanica.
